Kitchener’s new black garbage cans and green organic waste cans started rolling out to roughly 170,000 households across the Region of Waterloo in March 2026. For most residents, this will be the first time you’ve had enclosed, lidded cans for garbage, and the first time organic waste is going into a dedicated can with a locking lid.

That matters because summer is coming. By summer, an uncleaned garbage can in a garage or on the side of the house is going to smell. Organic waste residue builds up fast in warm weather. It’ll quickly become bacteria, mold, and maggot ridden if left long enough. The new cans are a big upgrade from bags, but they will build up with waste over time. Without regular cleaning, that residue builds up on the inside walls and bottom of the can, and it’s not the most fun task to clean it out with a garden hose.

How Garbage Can Cleaning Works

We show up on your garbage day after your cans have been emptied, clean them at the curb, and leave. You do not need to be home. You do not need to do anything. Your cans just need to be out and accessible.
